Frequently Asked Questions

DOES BEING IN THE CONTRACTOR POOL MEAN I’M HIRED?

No, being in the contractor pool means you are eligible to be contracted as needs arise. The number of contractors we contract with each semester is dependent on many variables, such as student demand, contractor performance, and changes to course offerings. Prior to the beginning of each term, we receive student enrollment numbers which determine the final number of contracts available for that term. We then go through an internal process to match contracts to contractors from our contractor pool.

ONCE I AM CONTRACTED, WILL I CONTINUE TO TEACH EVERY TERM?

Contractors are contracted as needed on a term-by-term basis. Contracts are based on many considerations such as student demand, contractor performance, and changes to course offerings. Our intent is to provide well-performing contractors with a contract each term one is available. However, if contracts are not available for all interested contractors, the contractor will return to the contractor pool for consideration in future terms.

WILL ANY TRAINING BE PROVIDED?

For contracted instructors, prior to starting your first term, you will be required to become certified. To do this, you will need to participate in a two-week training experience called Certification, which is typically held two weeks before the semester begins. The first week will require approximately 10 hours of your time and the second week will take 5-7 hours as you prepare your classroom for the term. Training meetings are also held weekly to calibrate the activities of each instructor as well as well as provide any updated information related to the work that needs to be completed.

For contracted graders, you must pass a weekly certification course in order to participate in grading assignments for the following week. Training meetings are also held weekly to calibrate the activities of each grader as well as well as provide any updated information related to the work that needs to be completed.

HOW MUCH ARE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS PAID?

Rates vary depending on the course, the term length and other variables. In general, instructors are paid a flat rate per term while graders are paid on a piece-rate based on the number of assignments graded. Information about pay for specific roles can be found on osipathway.com by clicking on the link to your role or by reading Section 5 of your contract.

HOW MUCH TIME CAN I EXPECT TO SPEND EACH WEEK?

Contractors spend an average of 10-12 hours per week in a typical course. New contractors often take additional time while they become familiar with the systems and tools, the course, and other contractor requirements.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME AS AN INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR?

As an independent contractor you will be entering into a legal agreement with Outsourcing Solutions Inc. to provide services, and it is your responsibility to comply with all local laws in your country. If you are not already legally compliant to operate as an independent contractor, we suggest you get started on meeting the requirements as soon as possible. You will also be required to provide a current NBI clearance to OSI.

WHAT WILL I NEED TO PROVIDE?

Course curriculum, training, and other resources will be provided to help you succeed and meet expectations as an OSI contractor authorized to teach or grade BYU-Pathway Worldwide curriculum. However, as an independent contractor, you will be responsible to supply your own equipment. This includes high-speed internet, a computer, a phone, a place to teach free from interruptions and other tools you might use in your teaching. You will also be responsible for any tax payments or withholdings from our payments to you.

I ONLY WANT TO TEACH ONE TERM EACH YEAR OR I WANT TO TAKE A TERM OFF. IS THIS POSSIBLE?

As an independent contractor, you may opt out of future contracts. Prior to the end of each term, we will request the availability of each contractor. At this point, you can inform us that you will not be available for the following term. When you are ready to return, you can inform us of your availability, but keep in mind that your availability does not guarantee you will be contracted. Contract availability is dependent upon many variables such as student demand, contractor performance, and changes to course offerings.
